Rapid Reference for Clinical Decision-Making

This quick reference guide provides point-of-care decision support for ultrasound probe cover selection. It is designed for use in fast-paced clinical environments where immediate, accurate product selection is required. Always defer to institutional policy and manufacturer IFU when specific protocols exist.

Quick-Selection Decision Tree

Q1: Is the procedure invasive or does it involve contact with mucous membranes or non-intact skin?

YES → Sterile Probe Cover

  • Select individually packaged, terminally sterilized cover (SAL 10⁻⁶)
  • Verify package integrity before opening (no breaches, within expiry date)
  • Use aseptic technique for cover application
  • Single-use only — discard after procedure as biohazardous waste
  • Examples: biopsy, vascular access, intraoperative, endocavity, wound imaging

NO → Proceed to Q2

Q2: Is the patient latex-sensitive, latex-allergic, or is their allergy status unknown?

YES → Latex-Free Probe Cover

  • Select polyurethane or polyethylene cover (verify "latex-free" labeling)
  • Document allergy status in patient record and procedure note
  • All pediatric/neonatal patients default to latex-free per AAP guidelines

NO → Proceed to Q3

Q3: Is the procedure a routine external examination on intact skin?

YES → Non-Sterile Probe Cover (latex-free recommended as institutional default)

  • Appropriate for abdominal, vascular, MSK, thyroid, breast ultrasound on intact skin
  • Select size compatible with transducer dimensions
  • Inspect cover before application — discard if defects identified
  • Single-use recommended per CDC and AAMI guidelines

Critical Safety Reminders

  • Probe cover use does not eliminate the requirement for transducer cleaning and disinfection between patients
  • Microscopic cover defects are not always visible — HLD per AAMI ST91 remains mandatory for semi-critical transducers
  • Never reuse single-use probe covers — this practice is associated with documented infection outbreaks
  • Document cover use, type, and lot number in procedural records when required by institutional policy
  • Report cover defects or failures through institutional quality improvement and adverse event reporting systems
