IV Cannula Fixation Dressing Sizing Guide

Selecting the correct fixation dressing size is critical for secure catheter fixation, infection prevention, and patient comfort.

How to Measure

  1. Measure from insertion site to end of catheter hub — minimum coverage zone
  2. Add 1.5-2.5cm sterile margin on all sides beyond hub
  3. Account for extension tubing — dressing must cover tubing junction
  4. Consider skin condition — fragile skin may need larger dressing

Special Dressing Types

  • Non-Woven Fixation: Most common 4.4cm x 4.4cm for pediatric use. Breathable, conformable, lower MARSI rates (JIN, 2019)
  • Transparent Film with Integrated Securement: Features built-in stabilization device. Reduces catheter movement by 84% vs standard (Sorbello et al., 2018)
  • CHG Gel-Impregnated: Releases chlorhexidine over 7 days. 60% CRBSI reduction (Safdar et al., 2014)

Clinical Recommendation: For most adult PIVCs (20G-22G), start with 6cm x 7cm transparent dressing. For small cannulas or pediatrics, 4.4cm x 4.4cm non-woven provides adequate coverage. Always follow manufacturer IFU.
