Selecting the correct fixation dressing size is critical for secure catheter fixation, infection prevention, and patient comfort.
| Dressing Size | Catheter Gauge | Best Site | Patient Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4cm x 4cm | 24G, 22G | Hand, small forearm | Pediatric, elderly, neonatal |
| 4.4cm x 4.4cm | 22G, 20G | Forearm, wrist | Adult standard, pediatric (>10kg) |
| 6cm x 7cm | 20G, 18G | Forearm, antecubital | Adult general, surgery |
| 7cm x 9cm | 18G, 16G | Forearm, upper arm | Trauma, rapid infusion |
| 8cm x 12cm | All gauges | Any site | Extra coverage when needed |
Clinical Recommendation: For most adult PIVCs (20G-22G), start with 6cm x 7cm transparent dressing. For small cannulas or pediatrics, 4.4cm x 4.4cm non-woven provides adequate coverage. Always follow manufacturer IFU.
