How Long Should You Wear an Eye Pad After Surgery?

Eye pad wear duration after surgery depends on the type of procedure, surgeon preference, and individual healing response. Following your surgeon guidance is critical for optimal recovery outcomes.

Duration by Procedure Type

ProcedureEye Pad DurationNotes
Cataract Surgery4-24 hours (overnight typically)Most surgeons remove pad next morning; protective shield worn at night for 1 week (AAO, 2020)
LASIK/PRK4-6 hours (napping period)Clear protective shields rather than opaque pads; worn during sleep for 1-2 weeks
Corneal Transplant24-48 hours initiallyExtended protection; pad changed at follow-up visits
Vitrectomy (Retinal Surgery)24-48 hoursMay require gas bubble — strict positioning instructions override pad preferences
Strabismus Surgery24 hoursBoth eyes may be padded in children; gradual return to normal activity
Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)24-48 hoursCold compresses applied over pad first 48 hours to reduce swelling
Minor Corneal Abrasion12-24 hoursPressure patch provides comfort and promotes epithelial healing

Why Eye Pads Are Used After Surgery

  • Protection: Prevents accidental rubbing, bumping, or pressure on the operated eye during the vulnerable immediate post-op period
  • Comfort: Reduces photophobia (light sensitivity) and provides a restful environment
  • Medication retention: Keeps antibiotic/steroid ointment in contact with the eye surface
  • Pressure: In select cases, gentle pressure reduces post-op edema and bleeding risk

What to Expect When Removing the Eye Pad

  1. Blurred vision is normal — the eye needs time to adjust; vision typically improves over hours to days
  2. Mild discomfort/grittiness — this is the surgical incision healing, not the pad itself
  3. Redness — subconjunctival hemorrhage (blood spot on white of eye) is common and resolves in 1-2 weeks
  4. Tearing/watering — normal inflammatory response
  5. Light sensitivity — wear sunglasses outdoors for the first week

Eye Pad Care Do and Donot

DO:

  • Keep the pad dry — no shower water, swimming, or face washing on operated side
  • Wear the rigid eye shield while sleeping for 1 week (cataract) to 2 weeks (corneal procedures)
  • Wash hands thoroughly before touching the eye area
  • Use prescribed eye drops exactly as directed

DO NOT:

  • Remove the pad before your surgeon instructed time
  • Rub or press on the eye — even through the pad
  • Sleep on the operated side for the first week
  • Lift heavy objects (>5kg/10lbs) for the first week — this increases intraocular pressure
  • Drive until cleared by your surgeon — typically 24-48 hours for cataract, longer for other procedures

When to Contact Your Surgeon

Contact immediately if you experience: severe pain not relieved by prescribed medication; sudden vision loss or significantly worsening vision; increasing redness or swelling; flashing lights or new floaters; discharge that is thick, yellow, or green; or nausea/vomiting (may indicate elevated intraocular pressure).
